Were They Expecting Some Other Donald Trump at the UN?

Apparently world leaders (and the American mainstream media) are still waiting on the moment that President Trump finally drops his “shtick” and surrenders to the temptation to become just like all the presidents before him. As if one day he’ll show up to the podium and deliver an address that could have just as easily been given by Barack Obama, George W. Bush, or Bill Clinton. A nice, soothing defense of America’s role in the global economic and cultural puzzle, a few stirring words about democracy, and a bit of poetry about humanity’s collective common goals. They must be waiting for that moment, because it’s the only thing that would explain the renewed shock and horror they seem to experience every time President Trump gives a major speech.
Jaws once again dropped this week when Trump took his “America First” vision to the United Nations. There were reports of “gasps” in the audience when Trump laid out in no uncertain terms what the U.S. would do to North Korea if challenged. World leaders rushed to reporters to talk about the unsettled feeling they got about Trump’s seemingly “selfish” talk about U.S. sovereignty. And mainstream media outlets spoke of how out-of-time Trump seemed – a president better suited to the 1920s than to today’s post-WWII Global Nation.
Well, they may have been shocked and horrified, but we were grinning from ear to ear. This was the Donald Trump we elected, and this speech will go down as one of the finest moments of his inaugural year.
At countless moments throughout the speech, President Trump made us proud to have put him in the White House.
On socialism: “The problem in Venezuela is not that socialism has been poorly implemented, but that socialism has been faithfully implemented. From the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or Communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation and failure.”
On the Iran nuclear deal: “Rather than use its resources to improve Iranian lives, its oil profits go to fund Hezbollah and other terrorists who kill innocent Muslims and attack their peaceful Arab and Israeli neighbors…The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into. Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it.”
On North Korea: “The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime.”
Time and again, Trump was uncompromising in his adherence to the “America First” principles that landed him in the White House. He sent a clear message to the UN – America would no longer use its riches to prop up every third-world pup tent that calls itself a country. And if his vision drew gasps and horror from those in attendance…they just haven’t been paying attention.
