His voice boomed, bouncing off the walls.
He strummed his guitar strings with force and passion.
The boisterous crowd sat enraptured, in awe.
It was a gorgeous summer evening at Aurora Magazine
in Leningrad in 1974. I was only ten, the only child there,
puzzled by the adults’ exuberance and overdrinking.
Vladimir Visotsky: it was an honor to listen to your private
concert, and the intensity and wonder of that evening
are with me still, forty years later. The lyricism and humor
of your songs left the private audience entranced, and me,
excited and unable to sleep that night. Thank you for
your boundless energy and charm. It’s little wonder you
burned yourself up so unfortunately young. You gave fully
to every moment of your life, holding nothing back.
And I am thankful for this indelible memory of my childhood.
